What this is
Jowar is a student hackathon prototype. It is free to use and is provided as it is, without any promise that it will be available, correct or complete.
It is not an official warning
The risk levels (Lower risk, Caution, High risk) come from simple rules applied to forecast rain and predicted high tide times. They are not a flood prediction. They do not come from the India Meteorological Department, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation or any other authority. Do not rely on this page for decisions about your safety. Check the road yourself and follow official advice. In an emergency, contact local emergency services.
Known limits
- The rain figures are modelled values. For Cyclone Dana in October 2024 the model showed about 40 mm in the 24 hours to 11:30 am, while the Alipore Met office recorded over 100 mm.
- Tide times are predictions for Garden Reach. Timing differs along the river.
- The thresholds that turn rain and tide into a level are placeholders chosen by the author and have not been checked against official guidance.
- The Replay tab re-runs past events with modelled rain. It is a sanity check, not proof of accuracy.
- Flood history notes for each area come from the sources listed in the project's repository and from the author's own observation.
